City of Diemen

Hansje Brinker’s DeepScan Deformation Map plots subsidence of every road in the City of Diemen, based on monthly measurements since 1992. For the first time ever, the planning for major repairs to roads and sewers is based on a complete set of quantitative data. With support from the City Council, the city is able to save $ 250,000 annually on maintenance expenditures. Continue reading

Lauwersmeerdijk

Strong currents in the Waddenzee cause the foot of the Lauweresmeerdijk to experience accelerated erosion. In 2010 the Lauwersmeerdijk did not pass a nationwide test of Levee Safety over a distance of 25 miles, as the underwater slope had become too steep, endangering levee stability. Hansje Brinker monitors the levee for its manager, the Noorderzijlvest water board, in order to locate deformation and to make sure that its deformation is not accelerating. Potentially damaging deformation in sensitive locations is detected early. Continue reading
